    International Bank Account

Which company holds the International bank account?

We have two international accounts – they are slightly different and we suggest you look at the benefits of both of them and select which one is best for you.

The two international accounts are Standard Bank and Lloyds Bank:

    Standard Bank

The account would be established with Standard Bank Isle of Man Limited. Standard Bank Isle of Man Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Bank Offshore Limited, in turn a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Bank Group Limited.

So I can set this up before I arrive in the UK right?

Yes you can, but the address quoted on the application form would need to be your existing home address, with supporting documentation to confirm this. Once you have actually moved to the UK, you simply need to notify the bank in writing of your new address and they will update our systems.

How do you help me to open the account?

If you would like us to check your bank account application form we are happy to do so. Just email us with the form and any questions and we will assist you. We also work closely with the bank, and will liaise between the bank and you if we need to do so. If you want to contact the back directly you can do so: Standard Bank has Customer Support Officers who are happy to talk with you. Sending a payment of £5,000 or over – £35 fee

    Money Exchange

    Where are SAT worldwide based?

SAT Worldwide are based in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, UK.

I am in China. If I was to transfer from CNY to GBP, I would first have to transfer CNY to USD and this would be placed in a USD account and then transferred from the USD account to the GBP account with SAT? (Will this be my personal account in SAT or the companies’ exchange accounts?)

Yes - you transfer your CNY to USD, then it goes to a USD account with SAT. This is where the conversion to Sterling takes place. SAT will send the money on to any account of your choice.

If you are an individual then you would open a personal account with SAT. If you are sending money from a company then you would open a company account with SAT.

SAT holds your USD in a client account. This is segregated from SAT company accounts and is a safeguard for the client. This is regulated by the FSA.

How do I withdraw my money from the SAT holding/my account, or do they automatically transfer it for me to my selected bank account?

Yes, once SAT have the money in the USD account, they will contact you and tell you the rate of exchange. It is your decision if you want to exchange it into Sterling. They will transfer it to any account of your choice the same day. SAT just need the sort code and the account number.

I understand there is no fee for the money exchange; however the company take their cut from the exchange rates from CNY to USD and USD to GBP. Will I be informed of this charge/difference at the point of transfer? I am concerned as this could cost more to transfer this way depending on the exchange rates variations between the currencies in comparison to a normal exchange service where a fee is charged and they just convert without taking a cut from the exchange.

Once SAT have the money in the USD account, they will contact you (by phone or email – to wherever you are in the world) and tell you the rate of exchange. It is your decision if you want to exchange it into Sterling, or if you want to wait. When you give permission for the conversion they will transfer it to any account of your choice the same day. As you are informed of the exchange rate it is all within your control when to exchange your money.

Which service is better to use to transfer money from overseas, the Lloyds Bank account with Free International Transfers or the SAT exchange?

We are not financial advisers, so we cannot advise you what to do. However, if you use Lloyds they will immediately credit your account with Sterling. There is no consultation with the customer about the exchange rate, and they will choose the exchange rate. In summary, you have no control when the exchange is done. It is safe to assume that although there are no fees with the bank, they will normally have a lower exchange rate than SAT. However, you are free to check this out before you carry out any transactions.

Can I use the prepaid MasterCard as soon as I receive it?

    National Insurance Number

Why is National Insurance needed in the UK?

If you work in the United Kingdom, either as a student or as a full-time worker during the vacation period (with your student visa, you may be entitled to work 20 hours per week during the term time and full time during vacation time), you must pay a National Insurance Contribution tax.

If you are an employee, a percentage of your salary (around 10.9%) is deducted by your employer as your National Insurance Contribution, and submitted directly to HM Revenue & Customs.

You will need to apply for a National Insurance Number and this will enable you to build up a history of tax contribution in the United Kingdom.

What assistance do you provide for this?

Once you have purchased the UK Study Pack you can download the form for National Insurance. We check that you have completed it in full and register it for you with the correct authority. We then email you your reference number, and let you know what happens next.
